TotalEnergies, QatarEnergy secure exploration block off Republic of Congo

TotalEnergies has secured a new exploration permit off Republic of Congo in partnership with QatarEnergy and SNPC, the French company said on Monday.

TotalEnergies holds a 50% operating stake in the block, alongside QatarEnergy with 35% and national oil company SNPC with 15%.

The 1,000-square-kilometre block lies 100 kilometres off Pointe-Noire, near the Moho production facilities operated by TotalEnergies EP Congo. One exploration well is scheduled to spud before the end of 2025.

“This award of a promising Exploration permit, with the material Nzombo prospect, reflects our continued strategy of expanding our Exploration portfolio with high impact prospects, which can be developed leveraging our existing facilities, and confirms our longstanding partnership with the Republic of the Congo,” senior vice-president exploration Kevin McLachlan said.

TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy have partnered on several major upstream projects worldwide, including in South Africa, Namibia, Suriname and Brazil. The companies are also long-standing collaborators in the LNG sector, notably in Qatar’s North Field expansion.

TotalEnergies is a global multi-energy company active in more than 130 countries across the oil, natural gas, electricity, hydrogen and renewables sectors. It has operated in Republic of Congo since 1968 and was producing around 160,000 boepd in 2023, mainly from the deep offshore Moho-Bilondo oilfield.

QatarEnergy is the state-owned energy company of Qatar, operating across oil and gas exploration, production, refining and LNG, with expanding international upstream interests.

SNPC is the national oil company of Republic of Congo, responsible for managing the country’s hydrocarbons resources and representing the state in partnerships.
